season one: glacier melt

Season one of Ice and Fire was produced by Mary Auld of the Montana Media Lab, and directed by Theresa Soley. Music is from Free Music Archive and Blue Dot Sessions.

Mary grew up transfixed by narrative radio stories while listening from the back of her parents' Subaru. After working as a farmer, teacher, print reporter and public radio host she realized she wanted to create longer, deeper stories about the ways people interact with the environment. Her favorite projects use sound to tell intimate stories about the human experience of environmental issues. Mary has worked on podcasts about kayaking activists, urban foxes in the UK and farming in Montana. When she's not constructing audio stories, she's running in the mountains, swimming in a river or tending to her absurd number of house plants. Mary received a masters from the University of Montana, and now directs the Montana Media Lab.

Theresa grew up distant from presently glaciated ecosystems, but close to Wisconsin's Ice Age Trail. She has assisted or led research and storytelling projects that span human-environment spheres in Equatorial Guinea, the Andes mountains, and across varied landscapes and contexts in Alaska. Ideation of Ice and Fire spurred while Theresa was a graduate student in the One Health Master's program at the University of Alaska Fairbanks during the pandemic. She also has a Master of Arts degree in science communication, and founded a new company called Sol Creative. Theresa has recently taken up freediving.
